Went to Ding Tai Feng for dinner with dancin 'kid yesternite. And counted the number of folds on the xiao long baos, and they were indeed exactly eighteen. Not very sure of the reasoning behind the need for exactly eighteen folds. Aesthetic? Good fortune? I think the reasonning would be more for the later. If it were for aesthetic purposes, they could shape it into longevity peaches and color 'em pink.
I think it might be because that it is the seventh lunar month now, which could help explain the efficiency in clearing the house of customers at closing time. Imagine the shock when the waitress came up to say they were closing. Certainly had a twinge of being chased-out feel to it. Hmm...
Overall, i found the food to be nice. But the rest of it didn't seem very nice. The waitresses thunking stuff onto tables with as much grace as sumo wrestlers doing their feet stamping ritual. And... the chopsticks... The chopsticks are disposable chopsticks! Call me picky, but i find it a neccesity.
Those of you who had dinner with me in my fortnightly extended family gatherings, would probably go like, 'Chey, wat would u care about chopsticks. U always used mismatched pairs wat.'. But hor... i purposely use mismatched pairs one wat. It goes to show how important chopsticks are to me, that i wouldn't use it if i didn't get mismatched pairs.
Yinyin could probably attest to my need for good chopsticks. I once bought a pair of coconut wood chopsticks in thailand, quite a beautiful pair, and brought it to use in Gippy. But one summer holiday later, when i went back to Gippy, i was left with half a pair of coconut wood chopsticks. I never really used any chopsticks in Gippy after that...
